Lord of the Rings and Lost star Dominic Monaghan will star in a new virtual reality game called Dark Threads. According to Deadline, it’s a sci-fi drama that is “fully interactive.”

The game comes from Cream Productions, a Canadian studio that is now venturing into VR after producing The Story of Late Night for CNN. A trailer can be seen here.

Dark Threads invites users to “embark on a fantastical journey of consciousness,” according to Deadline’s description. Monaghan is the player character, an inventor who came up with a plan to save the world, but of course, it doesn’t work out so well.

“Things go wrong when your attempt to upload your consciousness RHEA, a developing AI you’ve created traps half of you inside a CPU,” reads a line from its description. “You can’t trust the authorities. You can’t trust RHEA and you can’’ even trust half of yourself! Everything you think, everything you DO has consequences so, choose wisely.”

Kandyse McClure (Battlestar Galactica) will also appear in the series. It’s slated to release on July 22 for Oculus Rift and HTC Vive for $5 USD.

“Dark Threads is a VR adventure that compels players to consider the essence of consciousness, altruism, cruelty, and life itself,” Cream’s digital boss Johnny Kalangis said. “The experience is like a multiple-choice scripted series with three distinctly mysterious endings; each option directly affects the finale.”

Dark Threads is not Monaghan’s first video game, as he starred in Remedy’s Quantum Break, which was both a game and a TV show.

In other news about Monaghan, he recently appeared on Stephen Colbert’s late night TV show and tried to stump him with obscure Lord of the Rings trivia.
